Toitū Ngāti Porou Grants
Every grant we distribute is an investment in Ngāti Porou identity, reo, tikanga, and future generations. From tauira in tertiary study, to hapū strengthening their governance, to Taurāhere celebrating Matariki away from home — funding these kaupapa show how we grow capacity, honour whakapapa, and uplift our people everywhere.
The Toitū Funding Matrix is the tool we use to guide every grant decision. It makes sure funding is fair, transparent, and aligned with our Ngāti Porou vision.
The matrix asks a simple question: how well does this kaupapa strengthen reo, tikanga, whakapapa, and the long-term wellbeing of Ngāti Porou?
Every application is scored across five key areas:
Reo / Cultural Impact (40%) – does the kaupapa grow reo, tikanga, and cultural outcomes?
Reo + Tikanga Integration (20%) – are reo and tikanga woven into the kaupapa in real ways (karakia, kawa, whakapapa logic)?
Cultural Integrity (20%) – is it Ngāti Porou-led, anchored in whakapapa, mātauranga, hapū or marae?
Reach & Inclusion (10%) – who benefits, across rohe, hapū, ages, and reo levels?
Sustainability (10%) – will it last beyond this grant? Is there succession, legacy, or knowledge captured?
Applications are then colour-coded:
Green = Fully Funded
Orange = Conditional Fund (e.g. more info needed, capped amount)
Red = Declined
We support kaupapa across four tiers:
Mō te Iwi – iwi-wide projects (e.g. digital archives, iwi reo tools).
Ā-Hapū / Marae – local wānanga and hapū-driven training.
Takitahi / Ā-Whānau – leadership, kaikōrero, or succession kaupapa.
Purapura – seed projects with potential to grow.
Some things won’t be funded, like kaupapa with no Ngāti Porou reo/tikanga outcomes, private or commercial gain, or generic events with no Ngāti Porou mātauranga.
In short: the Matrix is how we check that each kaupapa uplifts our people today, and leaves something valuable for tomorrow.
